There will be some major leadership changes at the top of MercerBell next year, but those of you who’ve worked with us will notice with some familiar faces filling a few different roles.

Julie Dormand, our Managing Director, is being promoted to CEO, taking over from founding partner and current CEO Nick Mercer, who’ll be moving into the role of chairman of MercerBell Australia as well as taking on a wider role within Publicis.

There’s no change in our creative team, with David Bell remaining in his role as Executive Creative Director.

The changes come into effect on the 1st of January 2019.

A new chapter for Julie Dormand

Julie Dormand joined MercerBell in 2001 and is our longest serving member of staff. Over the past 17 years, she’s been a major driving force behind the agency’s success, managing key clients and winning new business. She’s also played a major role in launching Publicis Groupe’s Viva! Women initiative.

A champion of women in leadership, Julie also has a strong belief in mentorship throughout the agency. This comes from her passion for developing a staff culture built on values of fairness, egalitarianism and respect that’s recognised by both employees and clients.

Julie is heavily involved in industry initiatives, and has served on the ADMA board and received the ADMA AC&E Jon Clark Outstanding Contribution Award in 2016.

Next steps for Nick Mercer

Nick Mercer’s new role sees him assume the chairmanship of MercerBell Australia, but he will also be taking on the role as Country Leader for Publicis Data Spine.

Since overseeing the acquisition of MercerBell by Publicis Groupe three years ago, Nick has helped to grow the Groupe’s Power of One model that has seen Publicis agencies join together for new businesses wins. Most recently, this has included winning the NRMA Motoring & Services account alongside Saatchi & Saatchi.

Nick has also overseen MercerBell’s expansion to Melbourne, with the agency opening its doors in September 2017 and continuing to grow the office.

The Power of One

The changes within MercerBell coincide with Publicis Communications taking full ownership of MercerBell following the three-year acquisition earn-out period.

It also means that Julie will now report into Michael Rebelo, CEO of Publicis Communications ANZ, as well as becoming a member of the Publicis Communications Country Leadership team.

As Chairman of MercerBell, Nick will continue to report into Michael Rebelo, as well as reporting into Matt James, CEO of Publicis Media for his role with Data Spine.

Michael Rebelo identified, led and managed our acquisition by Publicis Groupe and has worked closely with Julie and Nick since MercerBell became part of Publicis Communications in 2016.

“The acquisition of MercerBell has been a strong success in terms of our ability to fuse the marketing narrative between brand, creativity and digital customer experience,” says Michael Rebelo.

“We have seen the market change dramatically over these past three years, substantiating our initial theory that clients are looking for partners that can solve and advise across a wider brand and customer experience remit. Our clients have benefited and we’ve grown significantly as a result.

“It’s very rewarding to see Julie being promoted to CEO and Nick continue to take on a bigger role in the Publicis Groupe. You couldn’t script a better next chapter.”
